Things I Do Not Understand. #1

So, I am singing a long to this fabulous song in my car, and it gets to the chorus. 

I sing, what I think are the right lyrics, and then think "what the Hell does that mean"? 

The Song:  Ventura Highway
The Lyrics:  Alligator Lizards in the Air

Now, you tell me.  What does that even mean??  AND WHO THE HELL IS JOE!!!
